The Yurok People of northwest California have cared for the Klamath River, its salmon, and traditional food and medicine sources for thousands of years. On December 10, the Yurok Tribal Council unanimously voted in the Yurok Tribe Genetically Engineered Organism (GEO) Ordinance to ban GMOs on tribal lands, including the now-FDA-approved AquaAdvantage salmon. While other tribes have declared GMO-free zones, this is the first ordinance of its kind in the nation. Yurok Tribe chairman James Dunlap stated, “GMO food production systems, which are inherently dependent on the overuse of herbicides, pesticides and antibiotics, are not our best interest.”
