Navy Sonar Permit Flouts Marine Life Protection Law: 9th Circ.By Christine PowellLaw360, New York (July 15, 2016, 8:02 PM ET) — The Ninth Circuit in a precedential ruling Friday concluded that the federal government did not comply with a law meant to protect marine mammals when authorizing the U.S. Navy’s use of sonar during peacetime.

A three-judge panel unanimously reversed a district court’s grant of summary judgment to the federal government in a lawsuit brought by a group of environmentalists and individuals who sought to limit the Navy’s peacetime use of low frequency sonar for training, testing and routine operations.
