The Trump administration is seeking to slash the budget of one of the government’s premier climate science agencies by 17 percent, delivering steep cuts to research funding and satellite programs, according to a four-page budget memo obtained by The Washington Post. The proposed cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration would also eliminate funding for a variety of smaller programs, including external research, coastal management, estuary reserves and “coastal resilience,” which seeks to bolster the ability of coastal areas to withstand major storms and rising seas.
And so it begins in earnest. The removal of references on the web site was a teaser for the fogies in the House Science committee – a misnomer if ever there was one – now comes the cuts where they really hurt. And more cuts announced today also – the USA Government no matter who is the president loves the Friday afternoon announcements.
The White House is considering deep cuts to programs and staffing at the Environmental Protection Agency as part of its first federal budget process, according to administration and environmental community sources.
A draft EPA budget document obtained by ABC News includes the virtual elimination of 38 EPA programs, including initiatives to clean up and restore the San Francisco Bay, Lake Champlain and Long Island Sound. The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative would be all but eliminated, going from $300 million budgeted in fiscal 2016 to $10 million in fiscal 2018 — a 97 percent cut.
Overall, the administration is considering a 25 percent reduction in the annual EPA budget from $8.25 billion to $6.15 billion and a resulting reduction in workforce of 19 percent, about 3,000 full-time employees, according to the draft. Source: Washington Post
But they’re not doing this to cut back on the hugely bloated, unsustainable, unpayable USA debt / budget deficit because if they were there is no way they’d be advocating for an increase in military spending – a budget allocation that already exceeds that of any other country and the other leaders combined! A budget that is never successfully reconciled – and yet no one really seems to care. A budget that if it were scaled back could have funds redirected to college.
The story from the NYT this week:
WASHINGTON — President Trump put both political parties on notice Monday that he intends to slash spending on many of the federal government’s most politically sensitive programs — relating to education, the environment, science and poverty — to protect the economic security of retirees and to shift billions more to the armed forces.
The proposal to increase military spending by $54 billion and cut nonmilitary programs by the same amount was unveiled by White House officials as they prepared the president’s plans for next year’s federal budget. Aides to the president said final decisions about Medicare and Social Security would not be made until later in the year, when he announces his full budget. But Sean Spicer, his spokesman, cited Mr. Trump’s campaign commitments about protecting those programs and vowed that “he’s going to keep his word to the American people.”
Who really makes money when the budget is increased? Is it your son or daughter who goes to serve? Those poor souls who joined up to make a living, get college benefits, health benefits, when there are no others jobs to provide come home to pitifully inadequate health care.
Our climate, our Earth, is being sold out to the highest bidders just like the lives of the youths who will have everything to lose.
This is nothing Hillary would have fixed. Obama, for all his eloquence, did great harm to our environment and Clinton would have continued those policies that were his and the four before him. All the bad choices and policies that led to this sorry situation Americans find themselves in today. The only answer is a total change. A revolution. Even if the climate is lost, especially if the climate is lost, those benefiting from the crimes should be not be in power any longer.
